Task 9 – Anatomy for Character Design

THE TASK

My challenge for this week is to create a character design with the use of human anatomy.

MY IDEAS/INSPIRATION

For this weeks task I decided to do some research into the anatomy of the human arm and making my own sketch to show the different muscle groups that are within the arm. Following that i decided to draw another original character but left it blank just to show the lines of where the anatomy would follow. I didn’t want to overdo it too much and make the muscles stand out so much it looked unrealistic but enough to emphasise the bones and muscles. I don’t know where the idea from the face came from but I just went with it as i liked the angry look of the character.

TECHNIQUES

For this task I decided to keep it simple with sketches as I felt that would be the best and easiest way to study anatomy before taking it further and using shadows to define muscle groups. On Photoshop i could use the symmetry tool to create a easy sketch that would be equal on both sides. After that I created a new layer and lowered the opacity of the original before going over it aging with more defined lines.

SUMMARY

Overall the human anatomy is a huge subject to study with there being so many muscles and bones it will take a while to fully understand how to portray these drawings when I’m doing them. Overall I think the line work is a bit sloppy but they were not intended to be masterpieces but more as experimentation and research into the anatomy of the human body. In future I would like to develop some of the skills learnt into a future character to make it really stand out and be eye appealing.
