Task 6 – Pixel Art

THE TASK

My challenge this week is to use the lessons learned from my lecture on Pixel Art to create a creature/character/object (any of these) showing a shading technique of my choice.

MY IDEAS/INSPIRATION

For this task it was to do pixel art however I have never done it and I’m not the biggest fan of pixel art as it limits detail. However, it does have a really nice effect if used properly! For this task I liked the idea of creating a 4 colour palette which can be seen in the corner. As my pixel art isn’t the best I thought it best to keep it simple. I was a big player of Pokémon back on the Gameboy’s and I thought this character would suit that style of game as an NPC. I liked it simple in colour and shape to get a good idea of the nature of the character being just a friendly average-joe.

TECHNIQUES

As mentioned I used the idea of creating a colour palette to try and keep it simple as its hard to give off a lot of details in pixel art anyway. To create the outline I was able to turn my brush into pencil mode which allowed me to colour individual pixels as I needed them. For the features as well as shading and highlights, I was able to select a darker colour variant from the colour palette and apply where it seemed fit.

SUMMARY

Overall my pixel art skills are very basic and I could do with spending more time researching it as its a great utensil to be able to use in certain types of game development. In future I would like to try and produce some sort of fictional creature as pixel art would be a great way to start with an early idea I believe. But overall happy with this piece of work as it correctly displays the character I had planned.
