Task 11 – Stylisation

THE TASK

For this week my task is to create a stylized character. Find an art style of my choice and attempt to mimic it by creating a front/side/back view.

MY IDEAS/INSPIRATION

For this weeks task I took the advantage to develop my character a little further into how I could possibly see him being portrayed in the future. I took some inspiration from Naruto type style manga characters with keeping it bright, extravagant and a little bit out there! The idea being this fictional character is some sort of fighter with a mysterious hidden identity. The quirky hair and strange goggles give it the unknown out-there feeling.

TECHNIQUES

For this character I started off with the headband and hair as I knew they were features I wanted to implement and worked my way down from there. Keeping it simple I didn’t want to add any shading as there is technically no light direction but I would love to implement this character into an environment. For the colouring I found the best technique is to create layers under the outlined drawing and add the colours into there and creating a new layer for each colour. This was a super easy and efficient technique and saved a head of trouble with uncoloured gaps sometimes in the linework. Lastly, by drawing faint straight lines across from the original drawing I could easily layout where I needed the features of both the back and side angle views.

SUMMARY

Overall I’m super happy with the development of this character as doing this has helped me to get a better feel of how I want to portray him in the future. I think my linework needs some work in being able to accurately display the figure of the character I’m trying to achieve. I feel like I can correctly and quite well draw a face and features but struggle from the neck down. More research and work will be needed to display the character as properly intended.
